Information about the galas

The primary school competition is an open event, with swimmers of any age taking part (though most children are in years 5 or 6). For relays and aggregate points competitions, schools are can enter either the small (with fewer than 71 pupils in years 5 and 6 combined) or medium/large schools competition. There are boys and girls races in the 4 x 25m medley and freestyle relays as the team events and the 100m individual medley and 25m and 50m breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and freestyle for individual events. Small schools may enter a combined team of girls and boys into the relays.

Within each heat, all the swimmers for one event will swim in graded races. This means, for example, in the girls 50m backstroke all the swimmers in this event at the first heat at Easton Leisure Centre, will be sorted into races where they will swim with swimmers of similar ability.

What happens at the finals?

The fastest eight swimmers / teams from each event across the heats will go forward to the final. There will also be two reserves for each event who may be able to swim in the final if anyone is unable to swim.

Points will be allocated as follows: the winning team is awarded 8 points, the second team getting 7 points and so on for individual events. This is doubled for relays, so the winning relay team gets 16 points, the second team getting 14 points and so on. Aggregate points are calculated by adding all the scores from each event for each school (still split into male & female competitions).

Each finalist is able to collect their certificate with their times on and the top three in each event will be awarded medals. Winners of individual events also win the coveted gold swimming hat. Winning teams from the relays and the aggregate points competitions get a trophy.
